My name is Nelson Lee, and I am a first-year Engineering student at the University of Toronto in Canada. Last year, I was the Student Council President at Marc Garneau CI, one of the biggest high schools in Canada. Currently, I am the youngest elected representative on the Board of Directors at U of T, Canada’s largest university. I’ve also been elected as a First-Year Representative in the Engineering Faculty.

Over the course in Student Council, I got many things accomplished such as creating our school’s first dedicated Mental Health month, started a Multiculturalism Council to celebrate our student’s diversity, increased student engagement and more. I had the honour to be featured in the Toronto Star, CBC, and numerous other news outlets. I wouldn’t have had the opportunity to grow so much as a person and leader and make positive change without being on the Student Council. I also had the amazing experience of working on some political campaigns on the provincial and federal level where I learned and acquired many tools that will ensure your Student Council election victory.

My speech

GOOD MORNING GARNEAU! My name is Nelson Lee, and I’m running to be your next President.

This year, I’ve had the privilege to host our school’s largest event, the MGCI Walkout. I’ve had the honour of leading a passionate and dedicated group of 20 who have given tours of our school to over 300 incoming Grade 9s and ESL students.

I realized that if we can do so much outside of Student Council, then we can surely do much more to improve our school if we’re in it.

I want to work towards a future where we have a Multicultural Council to represent you at every event. I want to work towards bringing back Spring Fling and looking into the idea of introducing the MGCI SeasonsPass. I will introduce International Street, an event where Culture Clubs can sell traditional food in the Galleria, have cultural performances onstage, and activities in the gym and backfield.

And for all you undecided voters, here’s what separates me apart. If you want a President who will put as much effort as I have in this campaign, campaigning before school, during lunch, during spare, and after school, making videos, posters, and trying to meet everyone, then I’m the right candidate for you. Because I am more than willing to sacrifice my time to make sure the events you attend are spectacular.

So when you vote today at 1:00, vote for someone with unrivalled experience and proven leadership. Vote for someone who will make Student Council for everyone, not just for a small group of friends. Vote for someone who will put culture first, who will put spirit first, but most importantly, put YOU first. Vote Nelson Lee for President so I can LEE-d you to the Garneau all of you deserve!

Thank You!
